I've tried every paint and hardener combination you can think of as well as base/clear and you can't beat john deere paint and valspar hardener IMO. I have also used Blitz Black and it is a perfect match for my 1978 214. I use spray cans and generally paint over red oxide primer. Maybe your thinner/reducer or primer under the paint is making the color appear different. The closest non JD paint I have used is Rustoleum satin black. Rustoleum makes 4 blacks. I haven't read that PPG hardeners work well with JD paints, and I think I've read most of the painting posts. JD Paint is a synthetic enamel, and most modern stuff is at least acrylic enamel and best stuff is urethane.
