As long as the fuel system is funtioning correctly, you can vary that by several degrees and you'll know by the rpm's at idle in gear when you have it right. The pointer is called a timing fixture but it is really a tool to adjust the ignition to fire as close as possible to 180 degrees apart. Any kind of a tool would work as long as it was straight and fasten to the crankshaft If you set one set of points you could put the pointer between the marks. Re: 40 hp evinrude carb settings. The way the service manual says. It is called "link & sync" if you start from scratch. If the throttle linkage, timing advance, and carb settings are not done in the proper sequence you end up chasing yourself. This is a multi-page procedure and far too detailed to go into here..
